24 year tradition

The Glenwood Springs Historical Society Board of Directors would like to extend a grateful thank you to our 2024 Historic Ghost Walk sponsors Alpine Bank, Bank of Colorado, Balcomb & Green, Stifel Investments AND to our critically important and talented volunteers who came together to help make this year’s event a great success. The Historic Ghost Walk is a beloved tradition in our community and functions as Glenwood Springs Historical Society’s largest fundraiser of the year.

The Historic Ghost Walk took place during the first three weekends in October and featured five tours per night (up from four per night in previous years). In total we welcomed nearly 570 patrons to Linwood Cemetery, up 20% from the prior year. Volunteers donned period costumes, guided patrons grave to grave by lantern light and then at the end of their journey offered homemade treats and hot apple cider courtesy of Roaring Fork Spice Co. It’s through the thoughtful care which each of our volunteers has put into their portrayal, and the behind-the-scenes logistic planning, that makes the experience come to life. The event provides an opportunity for both locals and tourists to connect with residents of Glenwood’s past and learn about the people who helped form Glenwood into the community we all love.

“History comes to life as local actors portray “ghosts” of real-life characters buried in Linwood Cemetery, including the infamous Doc Holliday and Kid Curry.”

ghost walk revue

The Historic Ghost Walk was expanded from our traditional Linwood Cemetery venue to include a one-night-only Ghost Walk Revue held on October 30 thanks to our new partnership with John Goss at the Glenwood Vaudeville Revue. This sold-out performance directed by Aristotle Beachey and stage managed by Jet Ryan allowed new and old fans to experience the magic regardless of physical fitness.

Volunteers are the heart of the Historic Ghost Walk requiring help from over 40 individuals. This treasured event is a favorite of so many each October and would not be possible without dedicated staff, committed volunteers and local business sponsors who make the event a success. Special thanks to Clara Miller and Carla Malmquist who provided much of the organizational support.

This year featured the following apparitions: Chip Wells as Caroline Clark Barlow, Jacquie Tannenbaum as Louisa Schwartz, Jamie LaRue and Brad Hancock as John Henry “Doc” Holliday, Lindsey Hamilton as Ida Lee Alburn, Merrilee Hindman as Katie Bender, Nick Daley as Harvey “Kid Curry” Logan, Paul Hamilton as Ed Hughes, Ryan Sarno as Harry Landis, Stephanie Deaton as Elmira Keir, Aubrey Parks as Ella Sellar, and Bill Kight as Jasper Ward.

Look out for another appearance of Louisa Schwartz during the Historical Society’s “Christmas Through the Years: Glenwood Edition” event at the Hotel Colorado Lighting Ceremony on Friday November 29.
