Executive Director Position
Executive Director of Glenwood Springs Historical Society and Frontier Museum Inspire. Lead. Preserve.
Are you a passionate leader with a deep appreciation for the history and culture of Glenwood Springs and surrounding area? The Glenwood Springs Historical Society and Frontier Museum is seeking an Executive Director who is experienced in nonprofit work, hiring and managing staff, and both a visionary and a collaborator, dedicated to fostering strong connections with volunteers, donors, and the community.
About the Role
As Executive Director, you will oversee all aspects of the Glenwood Springs Historical Society operations, including fundraising, daily museum operations, strategic planning, staff leadership, community engagement, and financial management. You will work closely with stakeholders to enhance exhibits, educational programs, and visitor experiences, ensuring the organization remains a vital cultural institution for the community.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and inspire a team, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment built on trust.
Develop and implement strategic initiatives that align with the museum’s mission and long-term goals.
Cultivate relationships with donors, sponsors, and grant-making organizations to secure funding.
Oversee budget management, ensuring financial sustainability and responsible stewardship of resources.
Cultivate relationships and foster community connections with individuals who share our passion for preserving local history.
Engage with the local community and partners to enhance programs and outreach efforts.
Work effectively with the Board of Directors and Museum Board President to develop policies and initiatives that drive growth and innovation.
Qualifications
Leadership experience in a nonprofit, museum, or cultural institution.
Strong background in fundraising, donor relations, and securing grants.
Exceptional interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
Skilled with MS Office suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Experience in financial management, strategic planning, and operational oversight.
Passion for cultural preservation, education, and community engagement.
Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, business management, public history, or a related field preferred.
At least five years of experience in nonprofit management, museum administration, or a related field.
Pay and Benefits
Up to $65,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications. We offer paid vacation and sick time. This position may be part-time or full-time and may allow flexibility for working remotely as needed.

The Glenwood Springs Historical Society was originally formed in 1963 for the purpose of collecting, preserving, and sharing the stories of Glenwood Springs and Garfield County's history, the organization plays a vital role in preserving cultural heritage for future generations. This not only enriches the community's cultural landscape but also serves as an educational resource for schools, researchers, historians, and tourists. These stories are told and explored through a variety of means including museum exhibits, educational programming, online resources, publications, community events, collaborations, oral history projects, and various social media channels. By employing a combination of these strategies, the Glenwood Springs Historical Society can ensure that the stories of the past continue to be told and appreciated by present and future generations. The Society cooperates with individuals and other organizations to accomplish these goals.
